EMV Chip Cards: Why They Matter for Merchants in 2025

EMV chip technology is the global standard for card-present transactions. Understand how it works, why it reduces fraud, and what the liability shift means for your business.

EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa) chip card technology has been the standard in the United States since the liability shift in October 2015. Yet many merchants still do not fully understand how EMV protects their business and why using chip-enabled terminals is essential.

How EMV Works

Unlike magnetic stripe cards, which store static data that can be easily copied, EMV chip cards generate a unique transaction code for every purchase. This dynamic authentication makes it virtually impossible to create counterfeit chip cards.

The Liability Shift

Before October 2015, card-issuing banks bore the cost of counterfeit card fraud. After the liability shift, if a merchant processes a chip card transaction using a magnetic stripe reader (because they have not upgraded to an EMV terminal), the merchant assumes liability for any fraudulent transaction. This means you could be responsible for chargebacks that would otherwise be the bank's responsibility.

Impact on Fraud Reduction

Since the EMV liability shift, counterfeit card fraud at chip-enabled merchants has decreased by 87% according to Visa. This represents billions of dollars in prevented fraud and demonstrates why terminal upgrades are a smart investment.

Contactless and EMV

Modern EMV terminals also support contactless (NFC) payments through Apple Pay, Google Pay, and tap-to-pay cards. Contactless transactions are faster than chip insertion and equally secure, as they also use dynamic authentication. Offering contactless payments improves the customer experience and can speed up checkout times.

What Merchants Should Do

  • Ensure your terminal supports EMV chip reading and NFC contactless
  • Always prompt customers to insert or tap rather than swipe
  • Keep terminal firmware updated to maintain security compliance
  • Consider upgrading to a modern all-in-one POS system like Clover for the best combination of features and security
