Payment Gateway vs. Payment Processor: What Is the Difference?

Many merchants confuse payment gateways with payment processors. Understanding the difference helps you make better decisions about your payment technology stack.

The terms "payment gateway" and "payment processor" are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different components of the payment ecosystem. Understanding each one's role helps you evaluate your options and avoid paying for services you do not need.

What Is a Payment Processor?

A payment processor is the company that handles the technical and financial aspects of credit card transactions. They route transaction data between the merchant, the card network, and the card-issuing bank. They facilitate authorization, settlement, and funding. Every merchant who accepts credit cards works with a payment processor.

What Is a Payment Gateway?

A payment gateway is the technology that securely transmits card data from the point of sale (physical or digital) to the payment processor. Think of it as the secure communication layer between where the card is used and where the transaction is processed. For ecommerce, the gateway is the checkout form that captures card details. For in-person transactions, the terminal itself serves as the gateway.

When Do You Need Both?

  • In-person only: Your terminal serves as both the gateway and the processor connection. You typically do not need a separate gateway.
  • Ecommerce only: You need both a gateway (Authorize.net, NMI, Stripe) and a processor.
  • Omnichannel: You need a gateway that integrates both in-person and online transactions with a single processor.

Cost Implications

Payment gateways typically charge a monthly fee ($10-$25) and sometimes a per-transaction fee. These costs are in addition to your processing fees. Some processors include a gateway in their pricing, while others require you to use a third-party gateway at additional cost.
